Dr Matthew Morgan will lead a Study Day on JMW Turner

on Wednesday 2 April 2025 10.00am – 3.00pm at Skellingthorpe Community Centre Lincoln Road, Skellingthorpe Lincolnshire LN6 5UY

Dr Matthew Morgan studied History at Cambridge, undertook his Masters in Art History at The Courtauld Institute and his PhD, ‘Mediating Art and Experience: Art Museums in Las Vegas’, is from Birkbeck, University of London.

Matthew is a freelance art historian, educator and museum professional whose first love is the art of JMW Turner. As Museum Director, he ran Turner’s House in Twickenham, describing it as ‘one of the great pleasures of my life to bring JMW Turner to as many people as possible.’

He has spoken to groups across Britain and Europe in settings as varied as festivals, cathedrals, art appreciation groups and schools. In addition, he has lectured at the National Gallery, Royal Collection, Wallace Collection and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Matthew has also contributed to TV documentaries, podcasts, radio shows and has made a series of short films about paintings with his daughters which can be seen on YouTube.

The Study Day will take the form of three lectures:

An introduction to the life of JMW Turner: The Sun is God

JMW Turner’s painting of the Fighting Temeraire has been called the nation’s favourite painting and appears on the twenty-pound note. But who was Turner and why is he so famous? To commemorate the 250th anniversary of his birth this talk explores the life and techniques of one of Britain’s most innovative and surprising artists from his early life in Covent Garden to his death in Chelsea.

In Focus: JMW Turner's Rain, Steam and Speed- The Great Western Railway Turner's Rain, Steam and Speed has been described as "the vision of an old man confronting the forces of a new age – and fearing what he saw". However, throughout his life Turner recorded the world around him and perhaps inevitably he also recorded some of the tensions in Britain between a rapidly changing society and a yearning for a more simple and maybe non-existent, past. By examining one of his masterpieces, Rain, Steam and Speed, we are going to be thinking about how Turner engaged with the modern world.

The Erotic Turner: Burning Desires

When the great landscapist JMW Turner died, all the paintings, watercolours and sketches in his studio were left to the nation. Amongst this large body of work, a group of nudes were discovered. In this talk we will look at the shocked reaction to this discovery, the steps taken to defend Turner’s reputation and how, although these may seem shocking to modern sensibilities, they were common in Victorian Britain.

Coffee/tea will be available from 10.00am and the lectures will commence at 10.30am. There will be two hour-long lectures in the morning with a short comfort break in between (no coffee) and one in the afternoon.

The STUDY DAY will close at approximately 3.00pm.

The cost of the STUDY DAY is £47.00 per person for members and £49.00 for guests. Bookings will close on Monday 24th March. There will be a non-refundable handling charge of £10.00 in the event of cancellation.

Officers of the Arts Society very much look forward to meeting you on the 2nd of April

On 27 March there will be a study day. The title will be ‘Unravelling the Silk Road’ led by Chris Aslan. Many of you will recall the riveting lecture he gave us titled ‘How to get down from a yak’. He will give three talks – ‘The Wool Road’ ‘The Silk Road’ and ‘The Cotton Road’ and examine how textiles have changed the course of Central Asian history, politics and a way of life. He will draw on his experience of living and working in the region for 15 years. The event will be in Skellingthorpe Community Centre and refreshments will be provided by Rebecca McGinty who fed us so well last year.

On 24 January there will be a celebratory lunch at the Tower Hotel.  As last year, there will be a choice of two or three courses and the price will be in the region of £30.00 per head including a glass of wine. A booking form will be sent out in early January. The numbers will be limited to 30.

Suzanne Fagence Cooper is a writer, curator, historical consultant and lecturer, specialising in 19th and 20th century British art and culture. For several years she was curator and Research Fellow at the V&A Museum as a member of the Exhibitions team.  From 2017-19 she was Research Curator at York Art Gallery for the major exhibition Ruskin, Turner and Storm Cloud. Some of you will remember the outstanding lecture she gave on Ruskin and Turner in 2019. She has published several books, the most recent being How We Might Live : At Home with Jane and William Morris.

The STUDY DAY will take the form of three lectures:  

• At Home with Jane and William Morris
• Painting Angels: The Visionary Art of Edward Burne-Jones
• The Model Wife: Women of the Pre-Raphaelite World: Effie Grey, Elizabeth Siddall and Julia Margaret Cameron will be included.

Coffee/tea will be available from 10.00am and the lectures will commence at 10.30am. There will be two hour-long lectures in the morning and one in the afternoon.  The STUDY DAY will close at approximately 3.00pm.

The cost of the STUDY DAY is £39.50 per person for members and £42.00 for guests.  Bookings are open to members of the Arts Society until 29 March, after which time they will be open to other local Arts Societies and members of the public. A day of three lectures, exploring the life and remarkable ascent of Elizabeth Hardwick to the uppermost levels of English society. David will examine how one woman rose from an impoverished Derbyshire family to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in Tudor England.  Tutor - DAVID BOSTWICK - Consultant on historic buildings to the National Trust, English Heritage, Historic    Scotland and specialist in the Cultural History of the Medieval, Tudor and Stuart periods.

Venue - The Eliot Room, Constance Stewart Hall, Bishop Grosseteste University.  Registration and coffee from 10.00am.

A Study Day will be held on Wednesday, 24th April 2019, at the Egleton Bird Watching Centre, LE15 8BT, organised by The Arts Society Rutland.   The title is Women in Art and the lecture will be given by Lynne Gibson who has a wealth of knowledge to impart on this subject.  

This Special Interest Day will look at how Traditional Art History has viewed Women in a world where the academic subject has been dominated by men. Stereotypes including the Virgin, (pure wife, loving mother), Venus, (Eve and ‘the fallen woman’) will be explored. Research over the past few decades has changed the subject of Art History as well as the Arts we see on display in Galleries and Museums.

Study Day, 3rd July 2018

A study day with three lectures, exploring the influence of Handel on 300 years of culture and music. This most 'English' of composers arrived in London aged 25, instigating a legacy which impacted greatly on the cultural development of the whole country. The day will explore the vision Handel bequeathed to the pictorial, literary and decorative arts in his adopted nation, and the subsequent international influences found further afield.
